NHEA Educator of the Year Award

JUDGING CRITERIA

Nominees will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Kälaimana‘o:  The nominee’s philosophy of education and its relationship to Hawaiians.
  • Accomplishments:  The nominee’s history of success and the reasons why the nominee deserves to be recognized.
  • Longevity:  The length of time the nominee has served and supported Hawaiian education, students, schools.
  • Impact:  How the nominee’s actions have changed and/or benefited Hawaiian students, community and/or groups.
  • Aloha:  The nominee’s commitment to the  Hawaiian community through service-oriented activities, such as volunteer work, civic and other group activities

AWARD CRITERIA

The nominee:

  • A Native Hawaiian Education Association Member;
  • Promotes higher education and aspirations of Native Hawaiians;
  • Works to promote Native Hawaiian educational leadership;
  • Develops and/or promotes strategies, curriculum, programs and activities that effectively address the needs of Hawaiians;
  • Perpetuates the Hawaiian culture, traditions, language and/or history in the school and community;
  • Fosters ways to increase Hawaiian empowerment and self-determination;
  • Maintains a positive image by constantly demonstrating responsible attitudes and behaviors — an honorable role model that inspires students of Hawaiian ancestry.

The awardee may be an educator, teacher, administrator, kupuna (elder), parent, neighbor, friend, business associate, church, organization, club, or educational project — any individual or group who has promoted, supported or excelled in educational leadership, curriculum development or educational innovations, are sensitive to Hawaiians and have encouraged Hawaiians in their educational endeavors.  This must be demonstrated by at least four of the award criteria.
